Attributes are the named properties that distinguish one version of a product from another — color, size, scent, finish, material, and anything else specific to what you make. You define the attributes that matter to your catalog, then assign values to each variant.
A candle line might use scent and vessel size; a knitwear shop might use color and garment size. Because attributes are structured data rather than free text buried in a product name, you can filter and group your catalog by them — for example, listing every "lavender" variant across all sizes, or every "large" item regardless of color.
Attributes feed directly into variants: each unique combination of attribute values becomes its own variant with its own SKU, price, and stock level. Getting the attribute set right early keeps the catalog clean as it grows.
