Ardent Seller vs Square

Built for the register, not the workshop

Square is a payments/POS and retail system, not a maker's inventory or production tool — the two solve different problems. Square consolidated its old à la carte subscriptions into unified plans in late 2025: a free tier, Square Plus at $49/month per location, and Square Premium at $149/month per location, with payment processing fees (2.4%–2.6% + 15¢ in person, depending on plan) on every sale and the maker-relevant retail inventory depth — purchase orders, vendor management, COGS/margins, and barcode labels — gated to Plus, and stock transfer orders between locations gated to Premium. Square Recipes brings ingredient costing and unit conversions, but it is beta, limited to the Square for Restaurants Plus/Premium plans, and cannot do batch prep, recipes built from other recipes, or items with multiple variations; deeper ingredient inventory means the MarketMan add-on at $99/month per location. Square has no production runs, no batch/lot traceability, and no cottage food or FDA nutrition labels. Ardent Seller starts at $0/month and covers all of that, so you can keep Square at the register and let Ardent Seller tell you what each product costs to make.

Square features
  • Different jobs, not a like-for-like swap — keep Square for checkout and add Ardent Seller for recipe costing, production runs, and true per-product COGS across every category you sell
  • Flat per-account pricing with a free forever plan vs. Square's $49/month per location for Plus (the tier that unlocks purchase orders, vendors, and COGS) or $149/month per location for Premium (the tier that unlocks stock transfers between locations) plus processing fees on every sale
  • Production runs, batch/lot traceability, FDA nutrition facts panels, allergen tracking, and state-specific cottage food disclosure labels — none of which Square offers
  • Recipe costing on every plan for every kind of maker — Square Recipes is beta, restaurants-only, and cannot build a recipe from another recipe or scale a batch
