Ardent Seller vs QuickBooks

Great for your books — not for your workshop

QuickBooks Online is accounting software, not a maker's inventory or production system — and the two solve different problems. Paid plans run $38 to $340/month following the price increase Intuit has published for 1 August 2026, and while Intuit added a free tier in 2026, it excludes the mobile app and every third-party integration. Inventory tracking needs the Plus ($140/mo) or Advanced ($340/mo) tier — the cheaper Simple Start ($38/mo) and Essentials ($85/mo) plans do not track stock at all. Even then it has no recipe costing, no production runs, no batch/lot traceability, no unit conversions, no cottage food or FDA nutrition labels, and no multi-warehouse stock — several of those exist only in QuickBooks Desktop. Ardent Seller starts at $0/month and covers all of that, so you can keep QuickBooks for the books and let Ardent Seller tell you what each product costs to make.

QuickBooks features
  • Different jobs, not a like-for-like swap — keep QuickBooks for accounting and add Ardent Seller for recipe costing, production, and true per-product COGS that QuickBooks cannot calculate
  • Every feature on the free plan — QuickBooks' free tier excludes the mobile app and all third-party integrations, and tracking stock at all means upgrading to Plus at $140/month
  • Recipe costing, production runs, batch/lot traceability, FDA nutrition facts panels, allergen tracking, and state-specific cottage food disclosure labels — none of which QuickBooks Online offers
  • Unit-of-measure conversions, multi-location stock, and guided stocktakes built for makers — QuickBooks Online has none of these (several are Desktop-only), and its fixed-asset depreciation is limited to the $340/month Advanced tier
