How Many Candles Does a Pound of Wax Make? More Than the Jar Label Suggests

A pound of wax makes anywhere from one to eleven candles, and the size printed on the container predicts almost none of it. Here is the count for seven common tins and jars, the three myths that make sellers under-count it, and the ten-minute test pour that gives you your own number.

A pound of wax fills three "8 oz." candle tins, not two. If you planned your first batch by the number on the label, the scale is about to hand you a pleasant surprise.

CandleScience lists its 8 oz. candle tin (opens in new tab) at 5.00 ounces of wax to the fill line, even though the same tin holds 8.50 fluid ounces before it overflows. So 16 ounces of wax divided by 5 ounces per tin is 3.2 tins. Count a typical fragrance load and it comes to about 3.4. Across common containers, one pound of wax makes anywhere from a little over one candle to about eleven, and the size stamped on the container predicts almost none of it.

The formula that does predict it is short:

Candles per pound of wax = 16 ÷ (pour weight per candle ÷ (1 + fragrance load))

In words: divide the pour weight by 1 plus the fragrance load to get the wax in one candle, then divide 16 by that. Write the fragrance load as a decimal, so 6% is 0.06. If that looks like more math than you signed up for, stay with me. There is one number in it you have to measure yourself, and the rest is division.

Candles per pound, by container

CandleScience publishes a wax weight to the fill line for its containers, which makes its catalog a useful reference even if your jars came from somewhere else. CandleScience does not say whether that listed weight includes fragrance oil, so the table treats it as your whole pour, wax plus fragrance. Use the per-pound column for costing and reordering, since those care about the rate. Use the whole-candle column when you are standing at the stove with one bag, because nobody sells a third of a tin. CandleScience calls its own figures estimates, since "fill levels and wax densities vary slightly" (opens in new tab). Your jar, your wax and your fill line will move them.

Three myths that throw the count off

Myth: an "8 oz." container holds 8 ounces of wax.

Reality: the name belongs to the container's first career. CandleScience notes that many of its containers are "manufactured for the food industry, so some of the size labels on the boxes do not reflect wax weight or overflow volume" (opens in new tab), including one named for the weight of honey it holds. The 8 oz. tin is the clean example: 8.50 fluid ounces to the brim, 5.00 ounces of wax where you actually stop pouring. Plan by the label and you would expect two tins from a pound when you will actually pour three, and your costing sheet would charge each tin for 8 ounces of wax it never holds.

Myth: multiply the fluid ounces by 0.86 and you have your wax weight.

Reality: the rule works, but only on the right volume. The 0.86 multiplier is a common rule of thumb, which jar supplier Glassnow calls the "standard wax density" (opens in new tab). Apply it to the 8 oz. tin's overflow volume and you get 8.50 × 0.86 = 7.31 ounces, almost half again the 5.00 ounces CandleScience lists. The brim measurement counts the headspace above the fill line, and your candle does not. Density is not one fixed number either: the safety data sheet for Golden Brands 464 container soy wax (opens in new tab) gives its specific gravity as a range, 0.698 to 0.921.

Myth: fragrance oil is part of the pound.

Reality: it rides on top. CandleScience defines fragrance load as "the amount of fragrance by weight used as a percentage of base" (opens in new tab), with the example that 1 ounce of fragrance in 1 pound of wax is a 6% load. So a pound of wax at 6% becomes about 17 ounces of finished blend. That helps your count a little: a pound of wax pours slightly more candles than a pound of blend would. It also means that at a 6% load, the wax on your costing sheet is the pour weight divided by 1.06, not the pour weight itself.

Find the number for your own jar

You do not need a density chart for this. You need a kitchen scale, one jar and ten minutes of pouring you were going to do anyway.

  1. Set the empty jar on the scale and tare it to zero.
  2. Pour your finished blend, wax and fragrance together, to the fill line your burn testing settled on, and read the weight. That is your pour weight.
  3. Divide the pour weight by 1 plus your fragrance load to get the wax per candle.
  4. Divide 16 by the wax per candle to get your candles per pound.
