What does a $365 barcode scanner do that your keyboard can't?
Honestly, almost nothing. A scanner reads a pattern of stripes or squares, turns it into a short string of characters, and types that string wherever your cursor happens to be. Zebra's own reference guide for its DS2208 describes the arrangement in a single flat sentence: "The host interprets scanned data as keystrokes" (Zebra DS2208 Product Reference Guide (opens in new tab)). It is a keyboard with one very fast, very accurate key.
That is the good news for a small seller, because it means the buying decision is much narrower than the product pages make it look. Scan speed, drop ratings and "industrial-grade" housings are aimed at warehouse workers doing a thousand scans a shift. You are counting 60 soap SKUs on a Sunday. Three questions decide which scanner fits a maker's shelves, and the spec sheets answer every one of them, just rarely on the first screen:
- Can it read a QR code, or only stripes?
- Will it type into a browser the moment you plug it in, or does it want an app first?
- When you walk out of range with a scanner full of counts, where do those counts go?
The short answer for most small sellers: a 2D scanner that runs in keyboard mode, which now costs $43 to $76 from the maker's own store (the Tera D5100 or the NETUM C750 below), not the $365 iPad specialist.
This guide takes five picks through those questions (one of them a corded model with a cordless twin) using each manufacturer's own spec sheets and manuals, then names the trap that catches the most first-time buyers. Prices are the manufacturers' own store prices as listed on September 18, 2026. Zebra and Honeywell do not publish a single list price, so their models are priced by resellers and go unpriced here.
Question 1: Stripes or squares?
Every scanner is either 1D (reads linear barcodes: the striped UPC on a grocery box, a Code 128 shipping label) or 2D (reads those and square codes like QR and Data Matrix). The difference is the reading engine, not a setting you can switch on later. Zebra's explainer is blunt about it: "With a 2D barcode, you need a 2D imager," and "You will need an image-based scanning engine in your device to capture 2D barcodes" (Zebra, What is a 2D barcode? (opens in new tab)).
For years, 1D was the sensible budget choice. That argument is gone. Tera sells a 2D scanner for $42.99 on its own store (Tera D5100 (opens in new tab)), while Inateck's 1D BCST-70 lists at $69.99 (Inateck BCST-70 (opens in new tab)). A 2D imager reads striped codes too, so buying 1D today means paying about the same to be able to read less.
There is a second, quieter difference. Laser scanners, the classic red-line kind, generally cannot read a code off a screen. Zebra: "Traditional 1D laser scanners cannot scan from a backlit device," while 2D imagers "can scan barcodes from backlit devices, such as mobile phones" (same Zebra page). Inateck's BCST-70 manual says the same of its own scanner: "Digital barcodes displayed on screen of phones, computers or tablets cannot be read" (BCST-70 manual (opens in new tab)). If a supplier ever emails you a packing slip with a barcode on it, or you want to test a label on screen before printing it, a laser won't help you.
Rule of thumb: If a listing says "1D," "linear," or "laser" and you plan to print QR codes, that listing is not for you, however good the reviews are.
Question 2: Does it type, or does it want an app?
This is the question that decides whether a scanner works with the software you already use.
Most scanners can run in keyboard mode, variously called HID (Human Interface Device) or keyboard wedge. In that mode the scanner needs no driver and no integration. NETUM's FAQ puts it plainly: "scanned data appears wherever the cursor is active, such as in Excel, inventory software, or a POS input field" (NETUM C750 (opens in new tab)).
That is exactly how a scanner works with a browser-based inventory app. In Ardent Seller, every inventory item and variant can print a barcode label: a barcode (Code 39, Code 128, UPC-A, EAN-13 and more) or a QR code generated from its SKU. Click into the Search box on your inventory list, scan a label, and the scanner types that SKU. The list narrows to the matching product or variant. There is no pairing screen and no scanner setting inside the app. The scanner is doing the typing.
Two details inside keyboard mode trip people up, and the manuals disagree about both.
Not every scanner starts in keyboard mode. Three examples from the manuals:
- Socket Mobile scanners, the ones most often recommended for iPads, ship in "iOS Application Mode (Default)," per Socket's own S740 page (opens in new tab). To type into Safari you scan a configuration barcode to switch to Basic Keyboard Mode first.
- Inateck's 2D BCST-73 defaults to its USB wireless adapter, and its manual notes that "The Bluetooth mode (HID) is not a default mode" (BCST-73 manual (opens in new tab)).
- Zebra's cordless DS2278 defaults to pairing with its own cradle. Connecting straight to a phone or PC as a keyboard means selecting "Human Interface Device (HID) Keyboard Emulation" (DS2278 Product Reference Guide (opens in new tab)).
None of this is hard. It is just the reason a scanner that "doesn't work" out of the box usually does.
The Enter key is a coin toss. Some scanners press Enter after every scan, some don't. Inateck's BCST-70 manual marks "Apply Enter for Suffix" as the default. Zebra's DS2208 ships sending "Data As Is," with a separate barcode to scan if you want Enter added (DS2208 guide, above). Neither is wrong. It matters in a spreadsheet, where Enter moves you to the next row, and it doesn't matter in a search box that filters as you type. Every manual checked for this guide includes a programming barcode to change it, so this is usually a two-second fix, not a reason to return a scanner.
On an iPad there is one more wrinkle: in keyboard mode, iOS treats the scanner as a hardware keyboard, which, as Socket puts it, "suppresses an onscreen keyboard" (Socket Mobile, HID vs. Application Mode (opens in new tab)). You'll want the on-screen keyboard back to type a customer's name. Socket's 700 series toggles it with the power button, and Inateck's BCST-70 manual says to long-press the trigger.
Question 3: Where do your counts go when you walk away?
A corded scanner answers this by never leaving the desk. A wireless one needs a plan for the moment you walk to the back shelf and lose the connection.
The feature to look for is inventory mode (some brands say storage mode or batch mode). The scanner holds scans in its own memory and uploads them in one go when you reconnect. Inateck's BCST-70 manual (opens in new tab) describes it as keeping "scanned barcodes in the buffer … and upload them to computer in batches." That is the difference between counting a garage stockroom with the scanner alone and dragging a laptop from shelf to shelf.
Read the fine print on two things. Capacity ranges from generous to unstated: Inateck lists 270,000 barcodes (opens in new tab) for the BCST-73, NETUM up to 100,000 for the C750, and Tera doesn't state a figure for its storage mode. Persistence varies too. Tera's D5100 manual says stored data "won't get lost when the barcode scanner is turned off" (D5100 manual (opens in new tab)). On Zebra's DS2278, persistent batch storage is a setting that is "Disabled by default" (DS2278 guide, above). A dead battery there can take a stockroom count with it unless you switch that setting on first.
Batch mode also changes what you can do with the scans. A batch of scans uploads as a burst of typed lines, which suits a spreadsheet column or a count sheet. It won't replay into a search box one item at a time. Batch mode is for counting; a live connection is for looking things up.

Tera D5100: the cheapest 2D scanner worth buying
$42.99 on Tera's own store (opens in new tab) ($45.99 with a stand).
Pros:
- Reads 2D codes, including QR and Data Matrix, for less than most 1D scanners cost
- Connects by a 2.4 GHz USB dongle or a USB cable, and its manual marks USB HID keyboard as the default, with "No driver from the manufacturer is required"
- Storage mode that survives the scanner being switched off
Cons:
- No Bluetooth. Tera says so outright: "it cannot connect to mobile phones or tablets"
- Storage capacity isn't published
Best for: a maker whose inventory lives on a laptop or desktop and who wants to scan at the bench or walk the shelves within dongle range.
NETUM C750: the all-rounder for bench, shelf and booth
$75.99 on NETUM's store (opens in new tab).
Pros:
- 2D, reading "bar codes from paper and screen"
- All three connections: Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless and USB cable, so the same scanner works with a laptop at home and a tablet at a market
- Offline storage that NETUM states holds "up to 100,000 barcodes"
- A 1,200 mAh battery NETUM rates at 20 hours of continuous scanning
Cons:
- The spec table on the same page describes memory differently ("64kb~2M") from the headline storage claim, a common inconsistency on budget-brand listings. Treat the 100,000 figure as the maker's claim rather than a tested number
- More setup options means more to configure: pick the connection mode from the manual before blaming the scanner
Best for: the seller who counts at home and sells in person. This is the one to buy if you can only buy one.
Zebra DS2208: the corded workhorse
Priced by resellers; Zebra doesn't publish one list price. Zebra DS2200 series spec sheet (opens in new tab).
Pros:
- 2D, with QR, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417 on the decode list
- Plugs in over USB and defaults to "USB Keyboard HID" (DS2208 guide, above), so it types into a browser the moment it is connected
- Want it cordless? The DS2278 is the cordless model in the same DS2200 series, with Bluetooth range Zebra rates at "Minimum 30 ft." (up to 300 feet with its cradle) and a battery rated for 84 hours per charge (DS2200 series spec sheet, above)
Cons:
- Ships without an Enter suffix ("Data As Is"). Fine for a search box; scan the add-Enter barcode from the guide if you count into a spreadsheet
- On the cordless DS2278, batch storage doesn't persist through power-off unless you enable it
Best for: a fixed packing or receiving station where the scanner never leaves the cable's reach, and you'd rather buy a scanner once than configure one.
Honeywell Voyager XP 1470g: good scanner, confusing SKU list
Priced by resellers; no list price published. Honeywell 1470g product page (opens in new tab).
Pros:
- A corded area imager that Honeywell describes as reading "traditional barcodes and digital screens"
- USB, keyboard wedge and RS-232 host interfaces, with a USB-C cable option (1470g data sheet (opens in new tab))
Cons:
- The 1D trap, sold under the same name. Honeywell's own SKU list includes a "1470G1D" variant described as "OMNI-DIRECTIONAL,1D" alongside the "1470G2D" models. The data sheet warns that "Decode capabilities dependent on configuration." A reseller listing that just says "Voyager 1470g" could be either
- No Bluetooth option on this model
Best for: anyone who already uses Honeywell equipment. Everyone else should confirm the SKU contains 2D before paying.
Socket Mobile S740: the iPad specialist, at an iPad-accessory price
$365 with a charging dock on Socket's store (opens in new tab); the store's checkout offers it only with a dock or stand.
Pros:
- 2D, reading "1D and 2D barcodes on paper and screen"
- Built around phones and tablets, with a power-button toggle for the on-screen keyboard in keyboard mode
- Replaceable batteries rated at up to 15 hours of scanning at a relaxed pace
Cons:
- Starts in iOS Application Mode. For a web app in Safari you'll switch it to Basic Keyboard Mode, at which point it behaves like any other keyboard-mode scanner
- No batch or inventory mode in the product pages or user guide (700 Series User Guide (opens in new tab))
- Socket's cheaper S700 is discontinued and was 1D only, per Socket's own page (opens in new tab). Its replacement, the S720, is 2D and lists at $285 with a dock (opens in new tab)
Best for: a seller whose POS app has a native Socket integration. If you'll run it in keyboard mode anyway, the NETUM C750, at about a fifth of the price, does the same typing.
The trap: a great 1D scanner is still a 1D scanner
The most-reviewed scanners on any marketplace are often the classics: Zebra's LS2208, Honeywell's Voyager 1250g, Inateck's BCST-70. They earned their reviews. Zebra's LS2208 page calls it a "handheld 1D barcode scanner" (Zebra LS2208 (opens in new tab)); Honeywell lists the 1250g's decode capability as "1D" and its engine as "1D Laser" (Voyager 1250g (opens in new tab)). Both will read a Code 128 label all day. Neither will ever read a QR code.
That matters the moment any tag, bin or package on your shelf carries a QR code, including the QR labels Ardent Seller prints. A 1D scanner turns every one of them into decoration.
How to test a scanner in five minutes before the return window closes
Whatever you buy, run this the day it arrives:
- Open a plain text editor, such as Notepad or TextEdit, and click into it.
- Scan a real label from your shelf. The SKU should appear exactly as printed, with no stray characters. If it prints gibberish, the scanner's keyboard-layout setting doesn't match yours; the manual has a barcode for that.
- Scan a QR code from one of your own labels. If nothing happens, you bought a 1D scanner.
- Scan the same QR code off your phone screen. Nothing happens? It's a laser.
- Check whether the cursor jumped to a new line. That's the Enter suffix. Decide if you want it.
- For wireless: walk to your farthest shelf and scan there. Then turn on inventory mode, scan ten items out of range, come back, and confirm all ten arrive.
- Finally, the real test: click into the Search box of whatever inventory app you use (in Ardent Seller, the Search box on the inventory list) and scan. If the right item shows up, you're done.
So which one?
- Laptop at the bench, tight budget: Tera D5100.
- One scanner for home and market: NETUM C750.
- Fixed packing station, buy-once: Zebra DS2208, or its cordless twin the DS2278 (covered in the same card) if you want the cord gone.
- Already a Honeywell shop: Voyager XP 1470g, SKU ending in 2D.
- POS app with a native Socket integration: Socket S740.
- Anything labeled 1D, linear or laser: skip it, however cheap.
