Etsy's New AI Policy for Sellers: What Changed in October 2026

On October 22, 2026, Etsy banned AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions, banned listings made with no human involvement, and started requiring one unedited photo of the real item on most listings. Here is what changed, what did not, and what to check in your shop now.

Etsy changed its rules on AI use on October 22, 2026. Three things are now required or banned. First, most listings need at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Second, AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions are no longer allowed. Third, listings generated by a bot with no human involvement are banned. AI-generated art is still allowed when you play a clear creative role and disclose it.

The sources are Etsy's Seller Handbook announcement, Important updates to AI use on Etsy (opens in new tab), and its Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab) policy, which shows "Last updated on Oct 22, 2026." Etsy's stated reason: many active buyers tell it they can't tell which items involve AI-generated content, and Etsy calls that a top-three barrier to shopping more often.

What Etsy's October 2026 AI policy changed, and what it didn't

A quick skim of the news can leave the impression that Etsy banned AI. It didn't. Here is the split, item by item.

Etsy's October 22, 2026 AI changes compared with what stayed the same
Common misreading What Etsy's pages actually say
Etsy banned AI art Still allowed when you play a clear creative role, such as an image built from your own original prompt. You must disclose AI use and cannot call the item handmade.
Every photo must be unedited Only one photo must be unedited. Your other photos can be edited, including with AI (lighting, color, crop, a new background), as long as the item still looks like what the buyer gets.
Editing that one photo is fine if it's minor No. Etsy's wording is that the required photo hasn't been edited or changed in any way.
Patterns are banned AI-written patterns, recipes and instructions are banned. Your own are fine, with one real, unedited photo of something made from them.
You must disclose AI photo editing Noting AI photo edits in your description is an Etsy best practice, not a requirement. Disclosing that AI created the item was already required by Etsy's Creativity Standards (opens in new tab), last updated June 2025.
Listing tools are banned Listings made with no human involvement are banned. Etsy has not said how much involvement counts.
Reports will get you removed The new "misleading AI imagery" report reason will, to start, only help Etsy study the problem. It won't trigger immediate enforcement.

Some items have their own photo rules. A print-on-demand item may use an authorized stock mockup. A digital download with nothing visual, such as an audio file, may use representative imagery, including AI images; every other download should include a preview or excerpt of the content. Custom and made-to-order work should show real pieces you have made before (Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab)).

What it costs you if an Etsy listing doesn't meet the new photo rules

Etsy names two costs: a refund you may have to cover, and removal. If a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from the photos, Etsy may refund the buyer and you may be responsible for that refund. Misleading listings can be removed, and repeat violations can lead to shop removal. A listing removed for this goes through the usual appeal on the Policy violations page in Shop Manager (announcement (opens in new tab); Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab)).

Etsy says existing listings that don't meet the image rules must be updated, but the announcement sets no deadline and no grace period. Treat that as "now." Etsy also says the listing form will show guidance when it detects AI-generated images among new photos, and that it plans to extend that guidance to images already on live listings (announcement (opens in new tab)).

What to check in your Etsy shop now

  1. Find every listing with no unedited photo of the actual item. Mockups, renders and any edited shot, even a lightly retouched one, don't count. (Print-on-demand, digital and made-to-order items have their own rules, listed above.)
  2. Shoot one plain photo per item. Use a real surface and change nothing afterward. Neither Etsy's announcement nor its Listing Image Requirements says whether a phone's automatic processing counts as editing, so turning off beauty filters and auto-enhance for this shot is the cautious choice.
  3. Consider making your most realistic photo the first one. Etsy recommends this as a best practice; it isn't a requirement.
  4. Patterns, recipes and seed listings: add a photo of a real result. That means something you knitted from the pattern, baked from the recipe or grew from the seed.
  5. Read your AI disclosures again. If AI made the item, the listing description must say so. If AI only edited the photos, Etsy suggests noting that in the description, but it's optional.
  6. Check any tool that creates listings for you. "No human involvement" is the line, so a person should review each listing before it goes live.

Etsy's announcement FAQ (opens in new tab) also points to one law outside Etsy, California's SB 1050 (opens in new tab), and notes that listing images and videos may count as ads. SB 1050 takes effect January 1, 2027 and requires a clear disclosure on any ad that prominently features an AI-generated "synthetic performer" (Crowell & Moring summary (opens in new tab)). A realistic AI-generated model wearing your jewelry could fall under it; AI touch-ups to a photo of a real person generally don't, per Crowell's summary. If your photos show an AI-generated person, raise it with a lawyer before January.

Etsy's announcement adds no requirement aimed at AI-drafted titles or descriptions, though a listing made with no human involvement is banned no matter what wrote it. If you use AI for copy, keep a person in the loop. Ardent Seller's AI Listing Copywriter drafts a title, description, tags and a materials list from what Ardent Seller knows about your product, including its real recipe if it has one. It never publishes anything to Etsy, and every word is yours to edit before you paste it in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Etsy's October 22, 2026 announcement says it will keep allowing AI-generated art when the seller plays a clear creative role, such as an image produced from the seller's own original prompt or inputs. You must still disclose that the item was created using AI, and you cannot present it as handmade or entirely your own creation (Etsy Seller Handbook (opens in new tab)).

A photo of the actual item against a real background that has not been edited or changed in any way. Most listings need at least one. Your other photos can still be edited, including with AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop, resize, straighten or replace the background, as long as the item still looks like what the buyer will receive (Etsy Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab)).

Yes, if the instructions are your own work. Etsy no longer allows AI-generated functional guides such as patterns, recipes and instructions. Pattern, recipe and seed listings must also include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using the product, and AI-generated images cannot be the only images showing the finished result (Etsy Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab)).

Yes. Etsy says any listing that does not meet the updated Listing Image Requirements must be updated, and that you may be responsible for the refund if a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from the listing. The announcement gives no deadline or grace period (Etsy Seller Handbook (opens in new tab)).

Etsy sets different rules for print-on-demand items (an authorized stock mockup is allowed), digital downloads (representative imagery, including AI images, for items with no visual content such as audio files; a preview or excerpt for everything else), and customized or made-to-order items (photos of real finished items you made before). Patterns, recipes and seeds need a real photo of a finished result instead (Etsy Listing Image Requirements (opens in new tab)).
